Protein = More Weight Loss? - Men's Health News

Looking for a more effective way to drop pounds? Swap out carbs for protein.?People who follow high-protein diets may have more success losing weight than those who eat less protein and more carbohydrates, says research published in?The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

We'd prefer a juicy steak instead.

Researchers pooled results from 24 past trials that put subjects on reduced-calorie, low-fat diets. Half of the subjects were assigned to a high-protein diet (on average, about 120 grams of protein per day), while the other half consumed a standard-protein diet (on average, about 67 grams per day).

Both diets had an average energy intake, for males and females, of 1,550 calories per day, says study author Thomas Wycherley, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research fellow from the University of South Australia in Adelaide.?But over an average of 12 weeks, people who followed the high-protein diet lost 1.7 pounds more than those in the standard-protein group.

You may lose more weight on a high-protein diet because your body spends more energy processing dietary protein than it does carbohydrates, Wycherley says.

Think of it this way: If you eat 100 calories of protein, your body will burn about 20 to 30 of those calories while processing the protein, says Wycherley. Compare that to 100 calories of carbs, and your body only burns about 5 to 10 calories.

Another reason for the weight loss may be because protein helps preserve muscle mass. And since muscle mass burns more calories than other types of mass, the additional calorie burn could result in a decrease in weight. (Looking for the best sources of protein for men? Try these 5 Protein-Packed Gym Snacks.)

So how much protein does the average guy need?

Men between the ages of 19 and 70 should shoot for 56 grams per day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Yet most adults would benefit from eating more than the recommended daily intake, says Donald Layman, Ph.D., a professor emeritus of nutrition at the University of Illinois.

Here?s how to put it into perspective: Highly trained athletes thrive on 0.77 grams of daily protein per pound of body weight. That?s 139 grams for a 180-pound man, says Mark Tarnopolsky, M.D., Ph.D., who studies exercise and nutrition at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

Want to make it work for you? Step on a scale, be honest with yourself about your workout regimen, and check out the following chart.

protein

And if you only hit the gym twice a week for around 30 minutes, you?re in the clear. According to Dr. Tarnopolsky, there?s no need to go beyond the recommended daily amount if you?re not highly active.

Entertaining Evenings In for Mum and the Family

With family budgets increasingly squeezed, ideas for inexpensive evenings at home for mum and the whole family are always welcome.? And sometimes busy mums just need time for themselves to relax and re-energise.? So on those evenings when the rest of the family are out, watching TV, or the kids are doing their homework, how about planning that special evening of pure self-indulgence?? Make sure that your time to relax isn?t interrupted by cries of ?Mum, where I can I find the ?.??? Tell the family that this time is yours and it?s sacred!

Set up the bathroom for a pamper evening, with a scented candle, and favourite tracks playing on the iPod.? Enjoy a wonderful relax in a deep bath with some special smellies, and a home-made face mask of honey, pumpkin pulp and cider vinegar to clarify and rejuvenate your skin.? Reward yourself with your favourite entertainment ? a great game of online bingo with Jackpotjoy, with the excitement of big cash prizes to win, and friends to meet in the bingo chat rooms.? Or re-connect with the important people in your life who you?ve lost touch with, maybe because they are living far away.? Set up a free talk session on Skype, and enjoy an evening catching up with old friends, learning about their lives, and sharing news.

With mum thoroughly re-energised, now?s the time to plan for a family evening in together.? Parents always welcome the idea of inexpensive entertainment, but the kids might take more convincing.? If you suggest an entertaining evening at home, there are likely to be groans and exclamations of ?That?s so boring!?? So here are a couple of ideas to get you started:

Create a restaurant at home.?? It?s important to involve everyone from the start in planning a special family evening, as their input will be needed to decide on the menu (don?t worry if there are some whacky food combinations in there), table design and entertainment.? Delegate the creation of an entertainment piece to the kids, with suggestions for skits or a disco or even karaoke.? Involve them not only in menu decisions but also in the cooking, and if you can find some paper chef hats and aprons at a local store, even better, to add the finishing touch.? This makes for a wonderfully silly and fun evening with all the family involved.

Family history evening.? Spend an evening creating an album for the whole family that can be added to from time to time, with each member choosing their favourite photos and then being asked to contribute any memories that they have of that time in their life.? Although there may be initial protests, kids secretly love looking at photos of their younger selves, and there are always great laughs to be had from baby pictures.?? Photos of mum and dad?s wedding, or parents and grandparents in their youth often produce gasps of astonishment ? ?I can?t believe the length of your hair, dad!?? Add in other ideas, such as asking each family member to tell the story of the funniest/most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to them.

Lava oozes into ocean after eruption in Hawaii

Streams of lava pouring into the ocean from the Big Island have been captured in a rare video that's drawing attention from around the globe.

The Kilauea Volcano has been erupting continuously from its Pu'u'O'o vent since 1983, according to Reuters, but the lava flow usually doesn't make the seven-mile journey into the ocean.

Lava first started flowing into the ocean on November 25. You can track the lava's flow on the National Parks Service website.

And officials are cautioning curious tourists to keep their distance. See a slideshow of the lava flow.

"Ocean entries can be quite beautiful but also quite dangerous," Janet Babb, spokeswoman for the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, told Reuters.

Babb said chunks of lava and hot water created from the lava-to-ocean impact can hurt people standing as far as 100 yards away.

"The molten lava meeting the ocean creates steam which may look innocuous, but can be quite hazardous," she said. "It's acidic and contains tiny particles of volcanic glass. And waves crashing with the lava can send out scalding water."

Even without the unusual spectacle, Hawaii's volcanoes are already a major tourist draw, with 1. 3 million people visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park last year alone.

Barry Periatt, a plans and operations officer for Hawaii County's Civil Defense Agency, said none of Honolulu's communities on the island of Oahu are in any danger from the lava flow. But on the Big Island, the nearby Kalapana Gardens sustained major lava damage from a 1986 eruption and from another in 1990. Most recently, one home in the community was engulfed in lava from a 2010 eruption.

Poll shows Israel's Netanyahu romping in election

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A new poll shows Israeli prime minister's hardline Likud Party handily winning the Jan. 22 elections despite the entry of a dovish new party into the race.

The Dialog poll gives Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud 39 of parliament's 120 seats, days after the party elected a slate of candidates that is more hawkish than the previous one.

It gives seven seats to the new party of former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, the onetime chief negotiator with the Palestinians. Livni, who casts herself as an alternative to Netanyahu in the vote, took those seats away from other centrist parties, not Likud.

The poll, published Wednesday, shows Likud and its traditional right-wing and religious partners capturing 69 seats.

The survey of 514 respondents had a margin of error of 4.2 percent.

Lamar Smith, Future Chairman For the House Committee On Science, Space, and Technology

An anonymous reader writes "Lamar Smith, a global warming skeptic, will become the new chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Someone who disagrees with the vast majority of scientists will be given partial jurisdiction over NASA, EPA, DOE, NSF, NOAA, and the USGS. Graphene/nanotube hybrid makes single-surface material for energy storage, electronics

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A seamless graphene/nanotube hybrid created at Rice University may be the best electrode interface material possible for many energy storage and electronics applications.

Led by Rice chemist James Tour, researchers have successfully grown forests of carbon nanotubes that rise quickly from sheets of graphene to astounding lengths of up to 120 microns, according to a paper published November 27 by Nature Communications. A house on an average plot with the same aspect ratio would rise into space.

That translates into a massive amount of surface area, the key factor in making things like energy-storing supercapacitors.

The Rice hybrid combines two-dimensional graphene, which is a sheet of carbon one atom thick, and nanotubes into a seamless three-dimensional structure. The bonds between them are covalent, which means adjacent carbon atoms share electrons in a highly stable configuration. The nanotubes aren't merely sitting on the graphene sheet; they become a part of it.

"Many people have tried to attach nanotubes to a metal electrode and it's never gone very well because they get a little electronic barrier right at the interface," Tour said. "By growing graphene on metal (in this case copper) and then growing nanotubes from the graphene, the electrical contact between the nanotubes and the metal electrode is ohmic. That means electrons see no difference, because it's all one seamless material.

"This gives us, effectively, a very high surface area of more than 2,000 square meters per gram of material. It's a huge number," said Tour, Rice's T.T. and W.F. Chao Chair in Chemistry as well as a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and of computer science and a co-author with former postdoctoral researcher and lead author Yu Zhu, now an assistant professor at the University of Akron.

Tour said proof of the material's hybrid nature lies in the seven-membered rings at the transition from graphene to nanotube, a structure predicted by theory for such a material and now confirmed through electron microscope images with subnanometer resolution.

Carbon has no peer as a conductive material in such a thin and robust form, especially in the form of graphene or certain types of nanotubes. Combining the two appears to offer great potential for electronic components like fast supercapacitors that, because of the massive surface area, may hold a great deal of energy in a tiny package.

Rice chemist Robert Hauge and his team made the first steps toward such a hybrid over the past decade. Hauge, a distinguished faculty fellow in chemistry at Rice and co-author of the new work, discovered a way to make densely packed carpets of nanotubes on a carbon substrate by suspending catalyst-laced flakes in a furnace. When heated, the catalyst built carbon nanotubes like skyscrapers, starting at the substrate and working their way up. In the process, they lifted the aluminum oxide buffer into the air. The whole thing looked like a kite with many strings and was dubbed an odako, like the giant Japanese kites.

In the new work, the team grew a specialized odako that retained the iron catalyst and aluminum oxide buffer but put them on top of a layer of graphene grown separately on a copper substrate. The copper stayed to serve as an excellent current collector for the three-dimensional hybrids that were grown within minutes to controllable lengths of up to 120 microns.

Electron microscope images showed the one-, two- and three-walled nanotubes firmly embedded in the graphene, and electrical testing showed no resistance to the flow of current at the junction.

"The performance we see in this study is as good as the best carbon-based supercapacitors that have ever been made," Tour said. "We're not really a supercapacitor lab, and still we were able to match the performance because of the quality of the electrode. It's really remarkable, and it all harkens back to that unique interface."

Republicans propose plan for undocumented young

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two Republicans set to retire from the Senate have unveiled a plan to provide a way for young people brought into the country illegally to stay here.

The legislation introduced by Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Jon Kyl of Arizona is similar to the Dream Act that would have given young illegal immigrants a path to legal status if they enrolled in college or joined the military.

The Dream Act failed to get through Congress and in June President Barack Obama took administrative steps to assure that young immigrants would not be deported.

The Republican bill has little chance of advancing in the lame-duck session, but is another indication of the GOP's newfound focus on immigration reform following the party's poor showing among Hispanics in the election.

ten Easy Tips to Enhance Your Ezine

Creating and publishing an ezine is a extremely essential component of your on-line business so you want to make it the best feasible ezine you can. I have produced errors and changed and re-altered my ezine many times to make mbt kisumu it the best it can be. I am nonetheless usually searching for ways to improve MOE. Over the years I have learned a couple of easy methods to improve my ezine. You can effortlessly implement these tips into your ezine.1. Usually, Usually have your e-mail, alongside with your name and url correct at the top of your ezine. Unbelievably, I have read ezines where I could NOT discover the email or even the title of the publisher!!! Also at the finish of your ezine have name, deal with, phone number, and e-mail and url again for simple access. Nothing is even worse than attempting to discover get in touch with info that for some cause is invisible!two. Make certain you also usually provide your subscribe and unsubscribe information as well. I would suggest placing this info at the base of the ezine. If you publish your unsubscribe url right at the top of your ezine it is like you are ????????????????? inviting your subscribers to unsubscribe.three. Provide a forum for your readers to interact with you ?????? ??? and your other readers. A section entitled, Reader's Corner or Reader's Feedback, where they can deliver in their feedback, questions, feedback or what ever. This gives them a opportunity to become a component of the ezine. This also helps build the reader- publisher relationship that is extremely important!4. Maintain your ezine clear and sharp searching. Do not add as well many of the squiggles and decorations. They may look *cute* but they occasionally make it hard to study your ezine, thus prompting the ole' delete finger to become activated! five. Always offer some authentic content material. ?????? ?????? Creating posts is a excellent way of doing this. If you are not yet comfy creating articles, (Yes, you can), write an editorial in each problem. Speak a bit about yourself, the newest happenings in the company, what is heading on about the net, etc., things of that mother nature. This is a opportunity to deliver out your personality, the main factor that tends to make your ezine distinctive!!6. Having too numerous ads in every problem is a excellent way of getting down the value of your ezine. I ?????? ?? would recommend no much more than 4 or 5 per problem. Studying an ezine that has twenty or 30 ads (oh yeah, I've noticed them) is not extremely fascinating or practical. Most people would not even go through the whole thing. Right here arrives that delete finger again!! You want your advertisers to get more worth for their ??? mbt cash and getting a limited number of advertisements is 1 of the very best methods of performing this.7. I believe adding a small area for this 'n that is a good concept also. Some humor, a small fun, fascinating tidbits, jokes, stories, and so on. We are company males and women, but we don't have to be one hundred% business, one hundred% of the time!!8. Privateness Policy - Place a privateness policy towards the ?????? ??? leading of ???????? the ezine. Let your readers know their privateness is safe with you and your ezine.9. Proofread - Always proofread and double-examine your textual content. You do not want your ezine to appear like it was created by a 10 year old. Correct all spelling and grammatical errors.10. Give your ezine an interesting and pulling title. I marc by marc jacobs have subscribed to most ezines just by the title on your own. If the title gets my attention, I subscribe.Names like: Energy Promotion EzineMarketing Mania EzineWeb Achievement Ezine are short and to the level. They also make me want to study more.Names like:Internet Marketing NewsJohn Doe's EzineHome Business Information are more generic and do not get my attention! They lack the "oomf" that make me want to subscribe.I hope some of these suggestions give you an idea of how you can improve your ezine and make it the best it can be. Remember that ezine publishing is 1 of the most important aspects of your online success. If you are in this company, you should be able to say, "I have My Own Ezine! " -) Great luck and achievement to you all!!

Justin Bieber goes shirtless on Twitter

Justin Bieber and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

By Alexis L. Loinaz, E! Online

Justin Bieber's not letting his rocky romance with Selena Gomez stop him from staying focused on one thing: giving fans some shirtless Bieber fever!

The "Boyfriend" crooner doffed his shirt for a revealing pic that he proudly posted on Twitter, showing off the results of his workout regimen.?

Justin and Selena's dinner date do-over: Benihana with friends

"Back in the gym," he tweeted Friday, dropping his overalls to reveal his cut torso, boxer briefs and signature tats.

Biebs' gym trip seemed to have gone well, because he later wrote, "good workout. #focused."

He certainly had reason to stay focused: It was an eventful weekend in Bieber Land over the weekend.

Are Justin and Selena on the road to reconciliation?

On Friday, he met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to receive the Diamond Jubilee Medal on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, which recognized Canadians' "significant contributions and achievements."

His choice of attire, however, raised more than a few eyebrows after Biebs showed up in overalls, a plain white shirt and a baseball cap. Talk about keeping it real!?

And then on Sunday, the 18-year-old appeared in a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey that was taped before he and Gomez split up. In it, the Biebs swooned openly about his ladylove, singling out her "genuine" spirit.

Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez back together for date night in Hollywood

"She's one of the most genuine people," the crooner shared. "She just has a good heart."

He also added, "I can talk to her about everything."

Justin & Selena's romance rewind

Looks like the two are at least trying to talk things out these days: They've been spotted together several times since E! News exclusively reported that that two had called it quits, hitting up an American Music Awards after-party and then, a few days later, grabbing dinner with friends at a Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles.?

(AP Photo/Michel Euler, File)

(AP) ? France's former first lady Carla Bruni says she disagrees with her conservative husband Nicolas Sarkozy and supports a plan to allow gay marriage and adoption.

In an interview with the French edition of Vogue for its December issue, the 44-year-old singer and supermodel said: "I'm rather in favor because I have a lot of friends ? men and women ? who are in this situation and I see nothing unstable or perverse in families with gay parents."

France's Socialists are pushing a bill that could see gay marriage legalized early next year. Though surveys have found that the majority of French people favor gay marriage, there has been a vocal backlash from religious leaders, voters in rural areas and ex-President Sarkozy's own UMP party.

"My husband is opposed for reasons linked to his political vocation, because he sees people as groups of thousands rather than people we know personally," she told the magazine ? which featured a 20-page photo spread of her decked out in designer clothes, harking back to her supermodel days.

Bruni, no stranger to speaking her mind, also called feminism outdated ? a view seemingly at odds with her image as an independent woman who forged careers in both fashion and music before settling down with Sarkozy.

"There's no need to be feminist in my generation," she said.

It's not the first time Bruni has sparked controversy on the subject. Last month, Bruni said her successor, Valerie Trierweiler, should marry her partner, President Francois Hollande, and ditch her career as a journalist.

In an interview with the French edition of Elle magazine, she dished out advice to Trierweiler, saying: "I think it is simpler to be the legitimate wife of the head of state rather than being his partner."

She added, "For my part, I felt a real easing of the general concern about me when I married Nicolas."

Tips For Understanding Auto Insurance In Today's World | Bob ...

Auto insurance is large part of being a responsible vehicle owner. However, auto insurance policies seem to be written in the most confusing terms possible. This article can help you to better understand what all of those terms mean. By understanding the terms of the auto insurance world, you will be a more informed consumer.

Be careful when you are driving, you need to be sure the cost of your car insurance stays low. You are likely to get a good driver discount, if you avoid accidents and tickets. These discounts will save you money, and may increase each year you go without having an accident or violation. It will also keep your premiums from rising.

TIP! If you drive a car, many states require you to have adequate liability insurance. You have the responsibility to be aware of coverage levels for your state, and to acquire insurance appropriate to those requirements.

After you purchase new auto insurance, remember that in many states insurance companies can revoke insurance for several reasons during the grace period. Make sure to always keep other insurance carrier information handy even if your financial history and driving record is stable, just in case you have to buy another policy.

Driving Record

Your car insurance is strongly affected by traffic tickets and points influencing your driving record. Similarly, when tickets and driving record points are no longer on your record, you can also see a drop in car insurance rates. Make sure you get a new quote after your old infractions expire to take advantage of your lower rates.

TIP! There is a mistaken belief that owning a sports car will make your insurance premiums higher, but don?t let this keep you from purchasing one. Some of them, in fact, do not.

Senior citizens are responsible for a high percentage of accidents which occur during daylight hours. This fact can raise rates, but also make it difficult for some seniors to get coverage at all.

Armed with a list of available discounts, mark off the ones you qualify for and total up how much you stand to save. You may be shocked at how much these discounts can lower your insurance bill.

If you are going to change companies, ensure that you have cleared up any money you owe to anyone. Companies will look over your driving record; pay any fines that you owe. Unresolved traffic issues lead to higher insurance premiums.

TIP! If you want to save money on an insurance policy, you should consider moving out of state or to another city. All states and cities have different premiums that you need to pay, as well as different requirements that you must meet.

When you are buying a car, be sure to check on the insurance rates. You can ask an insurance agent about the vehicles that have great rates. Knowing the rates can help you in choosing the car that is best for you. Your insurance premiums will be a lot lower if you make sure your new car is one with an excellent safety rating.

Talk to your automobile insurance agent and have them give you a list of the discounts they offer. Go through the list to make sure you are getting as many discounts as possible to maximize the amount of money you save.

Make sure to stay informed about basic insurance terms prior to searching for a company to get a policy from. While some states have different insurance rules, the concepts behind insurance are fairly similar. You should check quotes online and learn the terminology prior to speaking to a carrier. This will help you better understand your options so you will be sure to pick the best one for you.

Keep on file all records of all insurance bills you paid. You?ll need your records for proof of payment should there ever be an issue with the insurance company.

Supplementary Insurance

Check with your insurer to see if your policy pays for car rentals. This way you can avoid the costs of having to pay for supplementary insurance to cover rentals. Supplementary insurance can cost up to $20.00 a day while your automobile is being repaired, which may take days or weeks before it?s fixed. 00 every day while repairs to your car continue.

TIP! Several factors determine auto insurance rates. Some of these criteria include whether you are married, how old you are and your gender.

Coverage on policies can vary; therefore, it is important to understand what coverage is included in your policy. There are several common coverages that fall under the umbrella of auto insurance, including medical expenses and bodily injury. Be careful; some options are not available unless you have requested them, such as collision insurance. In many cases, the basic level of coverage doesn?t pay out to you at all; for example, ?liability coverage? only pays for damages that you are liable for, not your expenses. You need to make sure that your insurance covers your needs as well.

More than 350 African migrants intercepted off Italy

ROME (Reuters) - Italian coastguards said they had intercepted and picked up 358 African migrants attempting to reach Italy in two overcrowded vessels on Saturday.

Two hundred and thirty-five of the migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were travelling in a rickety wooden boat and the other 123 were spotted on a rubber dinghy, said the coastguards.

A coastguard spokesman, who was unable to give any information on where the vessels departed from, said the migrants were all in decent health and were being transported to reception centres.

Italy has borne the brunt of clandestine seaborne migration to southern Europe that has ebbed and flowed for several years. Migrants say they are attracted by the prospect of a better life in Europe.

Most migrants risk the voyage across the Mediterranean Sea in small and overcrowded fishing boats. Thousands have died as a result of shipwreck, harsh conditions at sea or a lack of food and water.

Saxby Chambliss: One more Republican breaks ranks over anti-tax pledge

Republicans are grappling with growing rifts in their ranks over a pledge to never raise taxes that has been rock solid for more than 20 years. That shift could determine how Congress deals with its looming 'fiscal cliff.'

By Gail Russell Chaddock,?Staff writer / November 24, 2012

The sharpest struggle in the lame-duck session of Congress, which picks up again on Monday, may well be within GOP ranks, as Republicans grapple with whether to relax a no-new-tax pledge that has been fixed party orthodoxy for nearly a generation.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R) of Georgia is the latest lawmaker to formally renege on the pledge. In a television interview on Wednesday, he said that he's no longer supporting the pledge because "times have changed significantly, and I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge."

Such breaks in GOP ranks could become decisive as GOP leaders negotiate with Democrats and the White House over how to resolve the "fiscal cliff," or some $600 billion in mandatory spending cuts and tax increases set to take effect in 2013.

Breaking a no-new-tax pledge can be toxic at the polls. President George H. W. Bush lost his bid for a second term after bypassing his 1988 "Read my lips: no new taxes" pledge in his budget agreement with a Democrat-controlled Congress in 1990. Since then, most GOP members of Congress and even a few Democrats have signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge by Americans for Tax Reform, an anti-tax group.

After Senator Chambliss's announcement, ATR President Grover Norquist shot back in a statement on Friday: "Raising taxes on the people of Georgia to pay for Obama's reckless spending is not the right thing to do for America or Georgia."

"We have a problem because Washington spends too much, not because Sen. Chambliss has failed so far to raise taxes on the hard-working men and women of Georgia," he added.

Sen. Ben Nelson (D) of Nebraska broke his no-new-tax pledge and soon after announced his retirement from the Senate in 2012. "[Senator Nelson] withdrew because polling showed he could not win a general election having both lied to his state and raised their taxes," Mr. Norquist said in Friday's statement.

Heading into the 2012 elections, 279 incumbent lawmakers in Congress had signed the pledge, up from 208 in 2010, according to the ATR website.? In addition, 286 challengers had taken the pledge, up from 241 in 2010. (The ATR site does not expunge the names of those who have since repudiated the pledge.)

CAIRO (AP) ? Prominent Egyptian democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei warned Saturday of increasing turmoil that could potentially lead to the military stepping in unless the Islamist president rescinds his new, near absolute powers, as the country's long fragmented opposition sought to unite and rally new protests.

Egypt's liberal and secular forces ? long divided, weakened and uncertain amid the rise of Islamist parties to power ? are seeking to rally themselves in response to the decrees issued this week by President Mohammed Morsi. The president granted himself sweeping powers to "protect the revolution" and made himself immune to judicial oversight.

The judiciary, which was the main target of Morsi's edicts, pushed back Saturday. The country's highest body of judges, the Supreme Judical Council, called his decrees an "unprecedented assault." Courts in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria announced a work suspension until the decrees are lifted.

Outside the high court building in Cairo, several hundred demonstrators rallied against Morsi, chanting, "Leave! Leave!" echoing the slogan used against former leader Hosni Mubarak in last year's uprising that ousted him. Police fired tear gas to disperse a crowd of young men who were shooting flares outside the court.

The edicts issued Wednesday have galvanized anger brewing against Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, ever since he took office in June as Egypt's first freely elected president. Critics accuse the Brotherhood ? which has dominated elections the past year ? and other Islamists of monopolizing power and doing little to bring real reform or address Egypt's mounting economic and security woes.

Oppositon groups have called for new nationwide rallies Tuesday ? and the Muslim Brotherhood has called for rallies supporting Morsi the same day, setting the stage for new violence.

Morsi supporters counter that the edicts were necessary to prevent the courts, which already dissolved the elected lower house of parliament, from further holding up moves to stability by disbanding the assembly writing the new constitution, as judges were considering doing. Like parliament was, the assembly is dominated by Islamists. Morsi accuses Mubarak loyalists in the judiciary of seeking to thwart the revolution's goals and barred the judiciary from disbanding the constitutional assembly or parliament's upper house.

In an interview with a handful of journalists, including The Associated Press, Nobel Peace laureate ElBaradei raised alarm over the impact of Morsi's rulings, saying he had become "a new pharaoh."

"There is a good deal of anger, chaos, confusion. Violence is spreading to many places and state authority is starting to erode slowly," he said. "We hope that we can manage to do a smooth transition without plunging the country into a cycle of violence. But I don't see this happening without Mr. Morsi rescinding all of this."

Speaking of Egypt's powerful military, ElBaradei said, "I am sure they are as worried as everyone else. You cannot exclude that the army will intervene to restore law and order" if the situation gets out of hand.

But anti-Morsi factions are chronically divided, with revolutionary youth activists, new liberal political parties that have struggled to build a public base and figures from the Mubarak era, all of whom distrust each other. The judiciary is also an uncomfortable cause for some to back, since it includes many Mubarak appointees who even Morsi opponents criticize as too tied to the old regime.

Opponents say the edicts gave Morsi near dictatorial powers, neutering the judiciary when he already holds both executive and legislative powers. One of his most controversial edicts gave him the right to take any steps to stop "threats to the revolution," vague wording that activists say harkens back to Mubarak-era emergency laws.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in nationwide protests on Friday, sparking clashes between anti-and pro-Morsi crowds in several cities that left more than 200 people wounded.

On Saturday, new clashed broke out in the southern city of Assiut. Morsi opponents and members of the Muslim Brotherhood swung sticks and threw stones at each other outside the offices of the Brotherhood's political party, leaving at least seven injured.

ElBaradei and a six other prominent liberal leaders have announced the formation of a National Salvation Front aimed at rallying all non-Islamist groups together to force Morsi to rescind his edicts.

The National Salvation Front leadership includes several who ran against Morsi in this year's presidential race ? Hamdeen Sabahi, who finished a close third, former foreign minister Amr Moussa and moderate Islamist Abdel-Moneim Aboul-Fotouh. ElBaradei says the group is also pushing for the creation of a new constitutional assembly and a unity government.

ElBaradei said it would be a long process to persuade Morsi that he "cannot get away with murder."

"There is no middle ground, no dialogue before he rescinds this declaration. There is no room for dialogue until then."

The grouping seems to represent a newly assertive political foray by ElBaradei, the former chief of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency. ElBaradei returned to Egypt in the year before Mubarak's fall, speaking out against his rule, and was influential with many of the youth groups that launched the anti-Mubarak revolution.

But since Mubarak's fall, he has been criticized by some as too Westernized, elite and Hamlet-ish, reluctant to fully assert himself as an opposition leader.

The Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice political party, once headed by Morsi, said Saturday in a statement that the president's decision protects the revolution against former regime figures who have tried to erode elected institutions and were threatening to dissolve the constitutional assembly.

The Brotherhood warned in another statement that there were forces trying to overthrow the elected president in order to return to power. It said Morsi has a mandate to lead, having defeated one of Mubarak's former prime ministers this summer in a closely contested election.

Morsi's edicts also removed Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud, the prosecutor general first appointed by Mubarak, who many Egyptians accused of not prosecuting former regime figures strongly enough.

Speaking to a gathering of judges cheering support for him at the high court building in Cairo, Mahmoud warned of a "vicious campaign" against state institutions. He also said judicial authorities are looking into the legality of the decision to remove him ? setting up a Catch-22 of legitimacy, since under Morsi's decree, the courts cannot overturn any of his decisions.

"I thank you for your support of judicial independence," he told the judges.

"Morsi will have to reverse his decision to avoid the anger of the people," said Ahmed Badrawy, a labor ministry employee protesting at the courthouse. "We do not want to have an Iranian system here," he added, referring to fears that hardcore Islamists may try to turn Egypt into a theocracy.

Several hundred protesters remained in Cairo's Tahrir Square Saturday, where a number of tents have been erected in a sit-in following nearly a week of clashes with riot police.

A Second Chance At Fatherhood: The Story Of Grandfather ...

Source: Shutterstock.com

Just yesterday, I was reading Frank Ocean?s very thoughtful, very insightful interview with GQ, when I stumbled across a sentence, a revelation about his own life that reaffirmed a truth in my own. In speaking about his absentee father, Frank Ocean, talked about how his maternal grandfather stepped in to become the father figure he needed.

?Her father was my paternal figure. He?d had a really troubled life with crack, heroin, and alcohol and had kids he wasn?t an ideal parent to. I was his second chance, and he gave it his best shot. My grandfather was smart and had a whole lot of pride. He didn?t speak a terrible amount, but you could tell there was a ton on his mind?like a quiet acceptance of how life had turned out. He was a mentor at AA and NA, and I would go with him to meetings.?

Though my own father has always been very present and active in me and my sister?s life, I knew from a very young age that there was tension where my grandfather was concerned. One could argue that when my grandmother turned up pregnant, he wasn?t ready to be a father or a husband. But in the 1940?s in Jamaica, it would have shamed my grandmother and her family to have a baby born out of wedlock. So he entered into two roles he was no where near ready for: husband and father. Unfortunately, he wasn?t the greatest at either one of those jobs.

As a husband, he was still living like a single man, a single, often mean-spirited man, who expressed his anger or frustration in violent ways. As a father he was present physically (for some) but not often emotionally. He was discouraging when he should have been supportive, deceptive when he should have been forthcoming.

Some would argue that I should have never known all these things about my grandfather; but I was an inquisitive, very observant child. So when I saw something, heard something or sensed something going down between he and my grandmother or between he and my mother, or her siblings I asked questions? persistently. And fortunately, the women and men in my family told me the truth, all while reminding me that at the end of the day, no matter what, he was my grandfather and I had to respect him.

So, as a child I had to come up with a strategy to do so. I?m not going to say that I never looked at him differently, there were times when I?d recall the latest story I?d heard about him and internalize it as my own pain, my own resentment toward him. But eventually, I got to the point where I realized that wasn?t my pain to carry. When I think about who my grandfather had been in my life, he was the man who drove us around Indianapolis, explaining the history of our city and expounding on the beauty of trees. He was the man who took us to the Christmas tree lighting on the circle, driving us around and around until we were dizzy. The man who bought us ice cream. The man who made a church a priority. And though semblances of his old ways would sometimes resurface, I could see that in a lot of ways, my grandfather was two different people. So I learned to split him.

When my beloved grandmother died, several members of our family, wondered morbidly and maybe even cruelly, why my grandfather hadn?t gone first. After all, my grandmother was an angel and a lot of times, my grandfather was nothing short of a hot mess. It took me years to understand it.

The answer came to me almost a decade later. My mother, who had just overcome a bout with breast cancer, called me to tell me that my grandfather came to see her at her job and in the midst of talking about her condition got caught up in a wave of emotion, embraced her and shed tears as he explained to her that he loved her, that there was a purpose for her life and that God had blessed her.

My mother couldn?t figure out why he?d acted out of his normal character, why he?d said those things to her. For me, it was obvious that there were things he needed to say. Despite his litany of flaws, anyone who?s around my grandfather for a few minutes, will recognize that he?s a blessed man. And after my mother told me what he had done, it became clear to me that God had kept and continues to keep my grandfather around because there are lessons he still needs to learn at 94 years old. Lessons, that maybe my grandmother didn?t need or had already acquired. Either way, I can appreciate his growth.

Being that my grandfather is in his 90?s, I always want to make sure I get to see him when I?m home. And over the past several years, he?s become much more than the man who took us on drives or bought us ice cream. My grandfather, who devoted much of his life to driving sickly elders, people younger than him in most cases, to the hospital, taught me about the importance of community service. His humble beginnings, immigration story and his successful business, have shown me that things these days aren?t as tough as they could be, that I can always work harder. When I moved to New York, without a job and into a triflin? apartment, my grandfather sent me away with words of encouragement, confidence and five English pounds, just in case I needed to convert it to US dollars if times ever got too tough.

If I?m called upon, to speak at my grandfather?s funeral, I?ll take a note from my grandmother and keep it real by saying he might have had a rough start, but God spared his life and allowed him to grow into the man he was supposed to be.

(AP) ? Forensic testing has proven that two more victims of the 2010 plane crash in Russia that killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others were misidentified and buried in the wrong graves, Polish prosecutors said Wednesday.

The number of misidentified victims has now grown to six and highlights flaws in the handling of the crash's aftermath in Russia. Such errors are deepening Polish distrust of historic foe Russia, while also fueling Polish conspiracy theories about the cause of the disaster. But a Polish official also has been blamed for misidentifying one of the victims, while even the families of victims of the brutal crash have made mistakes in identifying their loved ones.

Capt. Marcin Maksjan, an official with the military prosecutors, said two bodies suspected of being in the wrong graves were exhumed from two separate locations in Warsaw last week, and that forensic testing confirmed the suspicions.

"The results show unequivocally that the bodies of the victims were laid to rest in the wrong graves," a separate statement by military prosecutors said. It said the genetic tests were carried out independently by two research centers.

Polish media have said they were two Roman Catholic priests, but authorities wouldn't confirm their identities.

The suspicions arose after a study of forensic medical documentation sent by Russia raised suspicions that errors had been made.

Maksjan said it appeared that families of the victims made a correct identification of their loved ones after the crash but that Russian officials probably then put them in the wrong coffins in a Moscow institute of forensic medicine where the bodies were handled before they were sent to Poland for burial.

Since September Polish authorities have also exhumed four other bodies and confirmed they were mixed-up. In one case, the Solidarity hero Anna Walentynowicz was found to have been confused with another female victim. Soon after that Poland's last president-in-exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski, was exhumed and reburied after being found to be in the wrong grave.

In Kaczorowski's case, a Polish Foreign Ministry official misidentified the body in Russia. He recently apologized for that mistake.

Authorities say more exhumations could take place.

The string of exhumations, repeat forensic testing and reburials has revived the pain of the 2010 tragedy, which killed not only the president and first lady but also dozens of the country's top civilian and military leaders.

An awareness that something was amiss in the identification of the bodies has also added to suspicions some Poles hold of Russian ill will, and they are feeding conspiracy theories that Russia caused the crash intentionally.

Most Poles, however, reject the conspiracies. A Polish state investigation found bad weather and human error to have caused the crash.

Russian officials have said that any mistakes in identifying the bodies resulted from the badly damaged state of the bodies after the impact of the crash.
