Debris from tsunami to reach West Coast, join Great Pacific Garbage Patch
The Great Pacific?Garbage?Patch will soon include?debris from the Japanese tsunami, while one million to 2 million tons of?lumber, construction material,?refrigerators, TVs, fishing boats and other fragments from Japanese coastal towns make their way across the Pacific.
Refrigerators, TVs and other debris dragged into sea when a massive earthquake hit Japan last March, causing tsunamis as high as 130 feet (40 meters) to crash ashore, could show up in remote atolls north of Hawaii as soon as this winter, with other pieces reaching parts of the West Coast in 2013 and 2014, experts say.
Skip to next paragraphDebris from the tsunami initially formed a thick mass in the ocean of Japan's northeastern coast. But ocean currents have dispersed the pieces so they're now estimated to spread out some 3,000 miles halfway across the Pacific.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Tuesday the first bits of tsunami debris are estimated to make landfall this winter on small atolls northwest of the main Hawaiian Islands. Other pieces are expected to reach the coasts of Oregon, Washington state, Alaska and Canada between March 2013 and March 2014.
NOAA's tsunami marine debris coordinator, Ruth Yender, told an online news conference that agency workers were boarding Coast Guard flights that patrol the archipelago. NOAA also asked scientists stationed at Midway and other atolls to look for the debris.
In September, a Russian training ship spotted a refrigerator, a television set and other appliances west of Hawaii. By now, the debris has likely drifted so far apart that only one object can be seen at a time, said Nikolai Maximenko, a University of Hawaii researcher and ocean currents expert.
Most items likely sank not far from Japan's eastern coast.
One million to 2 million tons of debris remain in the ocean, but only 1 to 5 percent of that could reach American and Canadian shorelines, Maximenko said. The tsunamis that followed the magnitude-9 earthquake generated 20 million to 25 million tons of debris, including what was left on land.
Yender said that so far, no debris confirmed to be from the tsunamis has landed in the U.S., including large buoys suspected to be from Japanese oyster farms found in Alaska last year. The buoys would have had to travel faster than currents to get to Alaska at that time if they were set loose by the March 11 tsunamis.
Similar buoys have washed ashore in Alaska and the U.S. West Coast before the tsunami, she said.
Yender said there is little chance of any debris being contaminated by radiation. The debris came from a large swath of Japan's northeastern coast, not only near the tsunami-damaged nuclear power plant in Fukushima. Further, it was dragged out to sea with the tsunamis, not while the Fukushima plant experienced multiple meltdowns.
Nicholas Mallos, a conservation biologist and marine debris specialist for the Ocean Conservancy, said many of the objects in the debris were expected to be from Japan's fishing industry. That could pose a risk for wildlife, such as endangered Hawaiian monk seals, if fishing gear washes up on coral reefs or beaches.
"The major question is how much of that material has sank since last year, and how much of that remains afloat or still in the water column," Mallos said.
Maximenko said the dispersion of the debris makes it more difficult to track but no less hazardous.
"In many cases it's not density that matters, it's total amount," he said. "For example, if there's a current flowing around Midway island, that island would collect debris like a trawl moving across the ocean. It will collect all the debris on its way."
Ultimately, Maximenko said, most of the remaining tsunami debris will join?garbage?floating in a gyre between Hawaii and California produced by swirling Pacific currents. Much of that trash in a wide area known as the Great Pacific?Garbage?Patch?is bits of plastic, which slowly breaks down into smaller pieces but doesn't completely disappear. It was unclear whether large items like refrigerators will make it across the ocean because there has been little precedent for such an event.

Project Reinvention 2012: Former Academics and The "Real" World
Reading A Post-Academic in NYC's experience registering with a temp agency, and then reading the responses to her experience, have been especially interesting in this regard.
In particular, one conversational thread that has been niggling in my mind deals with the idea that former academics are over-qualified, but lack little "real-world" experience. Simply put, this idea infuriates me.?
Color me delusional, but as I read many job ads the only way in which I seem "under-qualified" is that I haven't been working in that particular industry for the past 3-5 years. So while I may not be familiar with the particular grant-writing software a company uses to store its files and information (under-qualified), I understand the general principles of locating grant monies, researching and writing proposals, and acting as a steward (qualified). Given a teensy bit of orientation to the culture/methods/practices of your individual office space, I'll be fine. I am "qualified", perhaps "over-qualified" (or at least compared to an undergraduate fighting for the same entry-level slot) for any jobs that require written communication, public speaking, teaching, a knowledge of publishing, sales experience (my pre-academic life), etc. And you know what? We ALL are.
How could someone suggest that A Post-Academic lacks "real-world" work experience? Is this based on the idea that she simply hasn't spent enough time in an office culture doing filing work?? I imagine that, like most of us, Post-Academic has plenty of transferable skills to the "real-world" because...gee...oh...I don't know...she has spent the past 20-30-40 some-odd years of her life working and living in the FUCKING REAL-WORLD!!
What is this magical "real-world" I've been existing independent of? Because, trust me, I haven't been traipsing through a magical University wonderland, riding a unicorn who shoots rainbows out of its ass. I've been dealing with demanding and entitled bosses, haggling over publishing rights, editing people's prose for journals, revising resumes, and teaching students. Sounds like the real-world to me, eh?
Being a graduate student and an instructor, or a graduate student and a research assistant IS the real-world. In fact, it's a "real" working world that puts one in a very difficult position when dealing with the other "real" worlds of eating, staying clothed, keeping a roof over your head, paying for health insurance, negotiating relationships while being grossly over-worked and grossly under-paid. By the time I hit this supposed "real-world" making something like 35k and not being worked to an emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual nubbin', something tells me that I'll be able to cope. Fuck it. With 35k I should be able to money manage myself into living on a yacht, drinking nightly bottles of Cristal, since I've been subsisting on about 20k less than that for the past 7 years, thankyouverymuch.

Keep colon cancer away with regular exercise and healthy diet?
OCEANSIDE?Colon /colorectal cancer is not exactly the greatest conversation starter and you probably want to avoid talking ? or even thinking ? about it.
But, there is a good reason why you should: March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to learn about the ways to prevent this disease, which will impact an estimated 143,360 Americans this year. How can you ensure you are not one of them?
?Any form of cancer is dangerous but, fortunately, colorectal cancer is one type that could be averted,? says Coach Berry R.B., a fitness expert and owner of Dare to be Fit Personal Training Studio in Oceanside, CA. ?Not only do we have an effective screening method, which can detect and remove cancerous growths fairly early, but there are also pro-active lifestyle measures that can help prevent this disease altogether.?
Yes, you have heard this many times before, but it is worth repeating: among the most effective ways to prevent colorectal cancer ? the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States ? are diet and exercise.
Here?s what your doctor will likely tell you:
- Your risk of developing colon cancer increases if you are physically inactive, obese, and regularly eat a diet high in red or processed meat, refined grains, and animal fats.
- If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you are about twice as likely to develop colorectal cancer as people who are physically active.
In fact, a few years ago, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Harvard University found that people who exercised regularly and continually were 24 percent less likely to develop this disease than those who exercised the least ? or not at all.
How can physical activity help lower rates of colon cancer?
In several ways, Berry says.
?Being overweight increases the risk of colorectal cancer and so does having diabetes,? he explains. ?Regular exercise substantially lowers both these risk factors.?
To reduce your risk of developing colon cancer, Berry recommends a regular fitness program that will effectively burn calories and fat.
?There are numerous workouts that are especially beneficial, especially when combined with healthy eating habits based on calorie-restricted, low-fat, high-fiber diet,? he says. ?A trainer can provide guidance and support you?ll need to achieve these goals.?
Berry adds that an exercise program and healthy diet ?will not only help reduce the risk for colorectal cancer, but also for other types of cancers and lifestyle-related conditions, such as heart disease.? And THAT is certainly a great conversation starter!?
Coach Berry R.B. is a Retired Master Gunnery Sergeant with over 30 years of experience?keeping Marines and Civilian personnel in top physical condition. From a?passion to help people change their lives through health and fitness,?Coach?launched the ?Dare to be Fit? program in Oceanside.
