iFixit reveals Nook Simple Touch With GlowLight's magic -- with lasers

Image

Turns out the secret to the new Nook's patent pending magic glow isn't so magic after all. Nope, it utilizes the wonder of diffraction. Yep, the driving force behind this marriage-saving device is science! Says iFixit in its latest teardown,

The display assembly contains the front glass, digitizer, and array of GlowLight LEDs, all fused together into one component. The glass over the E-ink screen takes the light from the eight LEDs and evenly distributes it across the screen.

How did the site discover the pending patentness after peeling back the e-reader's layers? Why, lasers, of course, beaming one through the aforementioned glass, which diffracted the green light before it hit a wall, proving once and for all that science can be fun. And ripping gadgets apart, naturally.

Why Romney can?t quit Trump

Top Line

Mitt Romney has crossed the threshold, gathering the majority of delegates in last night's Texas primary. And to celebrate this moment in his trajectory to the Republican nomination, Romney chose to stand onstage at a Las Vegas fundraiser ... with Donald Trump.

Trump is still embracing "birther" theories, saying that President Obama was not born in the United States, despite the fact that the Obama administration has clearly proven he was. Romney appearing with Trump is?a revealing moment in how the Rommey campaign thinks about the general election. Team Romney thinks that even now -- with the primary battle in the rear view mirror -- there is a danger in alienating someone like Donald Trump -- the campaign doesn't know what he might do on the outside, and it does not know what people who agree with Trump might do with their support.

But the Romney campaign is no longer just wooing Republican base voters, it is in the hunt for those crucial independents, too. So why cater to the Donald? Check out this week's Top Line to find out.

Helping Small Business Succeed Online | Crucial Paradigm Official ...

Succeeding online with Crucial

?

In my role at Crucial I have the privilege of speaking to a lot of our clients firsthand, I often hear a consistent theme from Small Business Owners. They may have some experience with online, they may have a website or a domain name but their website is not seen as a major source of revenue it is merely created to say they ?Have? a website.

I often find that with a bit of education on the possibilities that the internet can bring they soon realise that they need to invest more time and effort into promoting themselves online.

I think the overwhelming consensus as to why these businesses are not utilising online to their advantage is the fear of the unknown.? Facebook seems daunting, an online shop seems too complicated and expensive and twitter, Google + it all seems too much.

What small businesses need to know is that there are simple ways to dip your toes into the pool. Setting up a domain for your business, getting your business a hosting account and ultimately setting up a website is now easily accomplished by even the most novice user of the internet.

I can recall a conversation with one client, where he advised me he had a website for over 5 years. I asked him how much business he gained from his website and he said to me ?Andrew, I don?t get any business from the website; it?s just there so people can view my products then call me?.

I said to him ?wouldn?t it be easier if they could just buy them online and not have to call you??

That?s when I put him in contact with another small business like him that specialised in web design. They created an online store for him which enabled his clients to buy his products online. They also registered him with Google Shopping and Google Places

I called him just recently when I was about to write this article to see what his answer would now be when I asked him ?how much business he gained from his website? his response was now slightly different he said he now sells online only. He rented his shopfront out to a florist and uses the warehouse at the back to pack his orders and warehouse his stock. So not only has he gained extra revenue from renting the front of the shop he now has a streamlined business selling online.

This is the power of the online world, it opens your business up to new opportunities, Some people we deal with on a daily basis have been? in business 20-30 years and there continued success will require them to continually innovate and utilise the online world for all it has to offer them.

That same business owner now emails me regularly with some great companies he now uses to enhance his online store. He emailed me recently to tell me he was setting a virtual assistant for his online store from My Cyber Twin and is investigating the use of augmented reality to assist with customer service using Pointcloud.? He surely has moved on from just a brochure ware site now using cutting edge technologies to enhance his business online.

We love hearing of success stories from businesses succeeding online and it?s even better when we can feel like we were a part of that success.

At Crucial our Purpose is to help everyone succeed online we want to help as many people succeed online why not speak to us today and see what we can help you succeed at. Here is a link to some of our business hosting packages that well set you on your journey; you can register your domain name whilst you?re at it. If you have any questions along the way feel free to give us a call we are more than happy to explain things to you.

We have also setup strategic partnerships with other companies that exist to help people succeed online once you have built your website you may need to get the message out, get in contact with Web Marketing Experts they will be able to help you market your website and also help you with Social Media.

I hope this information has helped you on your journey of succeeding online.

Soundfreaq Recharge Review - Music wherever you are, whenever ...

Soundfreaq Sound Step Recharge Bluetooth speakerLately, we've been spending a lot more time listening to music with the kids when we might be watching TV. And I find that if we've got an audio system right in their room or in the dining room where we're hanging out, we're more inclined to use it. Now that I've discovered the ingenious Bluetooth enabled audio system from Soundfreaq, I can see why so many families love it.

Also, why it could be a great dad gift.

?

The Soundfreaq Recharge sets up in a few minutes which is not a small benefit for me. It works with any Bluetooth device at all to stream audio (yay for Android and Blackberry users).

For you iPad, iPhone, and iPod fans, download the free Soundfreaq app onto your device and let that function as your playlist and remote control. It's super intuitive to use--your own music and built-in FM radio are automatically imported into the app, so you just use that to play and control your music. It also can connect with your PC or your home theater system.

One more great feature for iOS users is that it doubles as a gadget docking station and charger. Nice touch: the removable spacer so you can fit either of them securely, even without removing a case. Plus the USB cord means you can charge other gadgets (Bluetooth headset maybe?) while you're jamming out.

I make no apologies that I really love that it looks great. Especially the Soundfreaq Recharge "Love" in bright red. It's lightweight with a small footprint, meaning it's also portable. If you want to take it from your kitchen to the party on your back porch, no problem. the built-in rechargeable battery should give you up to about 6 hours of listening time without an outlet. It would also be perfect for a small office.

Despite the compact size, the Soundfreaq speaker really does deliver some nice sound, especially for this price range. Now I am definitely not an audio geek that can distinguish the difference between 87and 88 dB sensitivity. But I know when my music sounds good, and indeed it does. The bass is clear and strong for a small speaker, and wherever we were in the room, it sounded good.

I've seen a few random reviews calling the sound "tinny" and honestly, I'd tell them to try out a pair of Muji cardboard speakers then report back to me with the real definition of tinny.

One warning though: when I was setting it up, a decidedly NSFW expletive-packed rap song started blasting and I have no idea where it came from. Also, I wasn't at work. I was home. With my 5 year-old. I felt much better when we got to They Might Be Giants. -Liz

Find the Soundfreaq Sound Step Recharge speaker?in red, black or white on sale in the $149 range from our affiliate Amazon. It would make an awesome Father's Day gift!

Did gassy dinosaurs cause global warming?

A new study found that giant plant-eating dinosaurs could have produced giant quantities of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Dinosaurs' gassy guts may have contributed to global warming tens of millions of years ago, according to a new study that finds a group of plant-eating dinosaurs could have produced about as much methane as all of today's natural and man-made sources of the greenhouse gas.

British researchers reported in Tuesday's edition of the journal Current Biology that the methane emissions from sauropods far outstripped those of today's cattle, goats and other cud-chewing mammals.

Sauropods were a diverse bunch of plant-eating dinosaurs, known for their small heads and giant bodies with long necks and tails. An average-sized sauropod _ such as Apatosaurus louisae, once popularly known as brontosaurus _ could weigh 44,000 pounds, making it several times bigger than an elephant.

Like many modern herbivores, scientists think, sauropods probably hosted a diverse community of microbes in their guts to help break down and digest their food, producing methane in the process. In cattle and other ruminants, that gas is released in the form of burps and flatulence.

Such emissions from modern-day cattle are considered a major source of the greenhouse gas, adding up to roughly 55 million to 110 million tons per year. Though carbon dioxide is more abundant in the atmosphere, methane is more than 20 times as effective at trapping heat, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The problem of cattle emissions prompted ecologist David Wilkinson of Liverpool John Moores University in England to consider the climate-changing effects of sauropods.

He and two other researchers used a formula from a study last year that linked body mass to methane emissions from guinea pigs and rabbits. The relationship is straightforward: The more body mass there is, the more methane is produced.

For their investigation, Wilkinson and his colleagues had to make some assumptions _ for example, that the ratio of body size to gas produced is the same for small and extremely large animals. "That's a slightly dodgy thing to do," Wilkinson acknowledged, "but in this case there's not any other option."

The researchers also used published population estimates from the late Jurassic (about 161 to 145 million years ago) to gauge how many sauropods had been roaming the Earth back then.

Altogether, the team concluded, sauropods were likely producing on the order of 572 million tons of methane per year _ more than five times as much methane as modern-day cattle and other ruminants. Today, worldwide emissions from animals and from such human activities as burning natural gas and collecting trash in landfills is estimated to produce 550 million to 660 million tons of methane per year, the researchers said.

Wilkinson said he expected to find that the dinosaurs were perhaps only a little more productive than today's animals. The results, he said, "surprised me."

It would take more study of the ancient climate to find out whether, and how, sauropods warmed Earth's atmosphere during the Mesozoic era, said Marcus Clauss, a digestive physiologist at the University of Zurich who helped develop the formula for determining methane emissions from body mass.

Wilkinson's team was not the first to suspect that Earth's ancient behemoths were responsible for some climate change: A 2010 study in the journal Nature Geoscience found that atmospheric methane levels dropped in the Americas once native megafauna such as mammoths and giant ground sloths went extinct _ around the same time that humans arrived on the continents.

President Obama's Gay-Marriage Support: Perez Hilton Weighs In

'I almost don't want to applaud him too much, because I wish he would have done this a long time ago,' blogger tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

Perez Hilton

continues to be a hot topic of conversation. Just about everyone has an opinion on the issue, including Hollywood's movers and shakers.

With all the overwhelming enthusiasm for the president's announcement, there is also cautious optimism on the subject, given the issue's continued hot-button status in pop culture, as well as around the nation. Perez Hilton is a public figure who counts himself among the cautiously optimistic, mostly because the issue is so loaded and political.

"It was definitely happy news, but I almost don't want to applaud him too much, because I wish he would have done this a long time ago," Hilton told MTV News. "Having said that, it's better that he did it than not. He could have waited until after the election. However, it's clearly a calculated move in that he felt confident that this won't hurt his chances at getting re-elected, and that's why he did it."

Hilton went on to say that he will happily applaud the president for his actions, but not too loudly.

"He's still playing a [political] game, it is what it is, and it's still something that is positive and a step in the right direction," he said. "I think it's ultimately a self-defeating fight, because gay marriage is a given. It's going to happen, it's just a question of how soon and, of course, as a gay man and someone who believes in equal rights for all, I would rather it happen sooner rather than later."

Speaking to the involvement of Hollywood — and, more specifically, the news that "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy announced Thursday (May 10) his plans to host a fundraiser for Obama during his visit to Los Angeles — Hilton emphasized the fact that same-sex marriage is an issue that everyone should be talking about and aware of, not just celebrities.

"I think Hollywood is great — I'm part of it — but I also feel like same-sex marriage and quality is an issue that is important everywhere," he said. "I think an everyday person can be just as or more effective in creating change than celebrities. It is important to have people in Hollywood to talk about it, important for people to be out of the closet, important to have represented in the media, but it's just as powerful for everybody to do their part. There are a lot more famous people than non-famous people.

"Obviously, I think [Obama] has done great work," Hilton continued. "My biggest wish for this country is in 20 years we have a viable at least four-party system. People need more options than just a Democratic candidate and a Republican candidate. I wish we had four great candidates from different parties to choose from. It's time to change the way things work. It's been this way for so long. It needs to evolve and grow.

Next international edition of ?The Ultimate Fighter? will pit the United Kingdom against Australia

After success in Brazil with an international spinoff of "The Ultimate Fighter," the UFC will head Down Under, with fighting prospects from the United Kingdom taking on UFC hopefuls from Australia. The new show, called "Smashes," will cast in London on June 12 and Sydney June 15.

According to UFC officials, it's playing off the natural rivalry between Aussies and Brits. To the press release:

"Australia and the UK have a fierce, long-standing rivalry, and where better to settle the score than in the UFC's Octagon," said Marshall Zelaznik, UFC's Managing Director of International Development. "The popularity of MMA has exploded in Australia and the UK, with gyms opening all over the respective countries. There is an athlete in one of those gyms who hasn't had the chance to show the world what he can do ? The Ultimate Fighter is going give to him that opportunity. We're going to discover the UFC's future stars, you can bet on it."

TUF, American style has already produced plenty of British and Australian UFC veterans. Michael Bisping won season three and then went on to coach a host of Brits on season nine. Ausses George Sotiropoulos and Kyle Noke also made their name on TUF.

There is no word on coaches yet, but American fans can look forward to plenty of subtitles on English-speakers. Most of Team UK from season nine had that honor. By sheer history alone, my money is on Australia. Remember, they are descended from the British convicts of yore.

When it comes to online gaming console wars, the Playstation 3, or PS3 Console is a clear winner. It handily beats its rivals, such as Microsoft's Xbox-360, by more than a battlefield's length. The continuously increasing flood of constructive ps3 game reviews are proof that this Sony console is now the de-facto winner. One of the great advantage of buying a ps3 console is free access to the ever growing Playstation Network community. PS3 system families now converge in their entertainment centers to make use of quality family time. Contending online gaming communities charge up to $50 a year for each account, requiring a 4-member family to pay $200 in fees. But with a Play Station, you get that for free! Today's tough financial conditions are wreaking havoc on families too. It's no surprise then that many families are trimming back on a large scale on games and entertainment. But the Playstation offers additional savings for cash strapped families. With a Blu-Ray-capable PS3 Console, you don't have to spend a couple of hundred dollars extra to get a Blu-Ray player anymore. Best of all, you get to watch movies and play ps3 games in high-resolution 1080p, which is a more enjoyable visual experience than the competition's 1080i. The addition of Blu-Ray capability to the PS3 Console is not just great for watching regular Blu-Ray movies. The higher capacity storage means you will have access to more exclusive Playstation 3 content than the competition has to offer. But it's not just mass content that ps 3 games offer - it's also convenience. Many games on, such as ODST, Forza 3 and ME2 for instance, competing platforms come as multiple-disc offerings. A 3-disc version of FFXIII is presented for systems with 540 resolution. A PS3 Console on the other hand offers FFXIII as a single Blu-Ray disc game that can be played in 720 resolution. That surely is a remarkable offering! On line ps3 reviews are buzzing about the processor that PS3 Console now offers. The ps3 systems come with a Cell processor, favored by many a mainframe and by processing power-hungry applications such as in NASA labs. And with all the high graphic action contained in today's games, a faster processor definitely adds to the overall gaming experience. For some users, who have a liking for particular brands, 3rd party devices are vital. The PS3 Consoles offer excellent proprietary ps3 accessories. But there is also a huge choice of readily available 3rd-party accessories, such as headsets, to work with the PS3. Because of irresistible ps3 bundles, owning a Playstation 3 can be very economical. But with 3rd-party accessories available, the cost to own a Play Station would be much cheaper than anything the competition has to offer. Include with that a number of neat features, such as comparatively higher disc storage, and compatibility with former versions of the Playstation, and the ps3 system easily beats the competition by a long stretch.

iCache Geode digital wallet hands-on (video)

Image

The iCache Geode was easily the most impressive use of technology that we saw during CTIA 2012. It's the epitome of how a fantastic tech idea can be translated to real world use in a very classy and clever way. At its heart it is extremely simple: take all your existing credit, debit, and loyalty cards, save them in a secure way and be able to use any of them without actually having the original cards handy. The system is comprised of a housing for the iPhone coupled with an app, an E Ink display on the rear, a fingerprint scanner, the GeoCard, and a magnetic stripe reader that is capable of quickly reading in your card details and saving them. Using the Geode is a two-step process, scan all your cards into the device with an included scanner attachment, then using the iPhone app select your method of payment and the GeoCard in the housing is instantly programmed. Pop the card out, tap it on a solid surface to activate it and spend your money. Loyalty cards are equally easy to use: select one of them in the app and its barcode is written to the E Ink display on the Geode's rear surface.

Of course iCache has considered the security implications and has addressed them a few different ways. The iPhone doesn't store any of your card details as they're kept in the housing itself, on launch the app does a hardware check to be sure nothing's been tampered with, asks for a fingerprint scan, and the card programming only lasts for a user-defined period of time after you've tapped it on the table. Click on through for a video demo of the whole ride.

Jet disappears from radar near Indonesian mountain

The missing Sukhoi Superjet-100 takes off for a demonstration flight from Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma airport on Wednesday. The aircraft was on the fourth stop of a six-nation "Welcome Asia!" roadshow after having already been to Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 9:56 a.m. ET: A Russian-made airliner carrying 46 people lost contact with air traffic controllers during a demonstration flight in Indonesia Wednesday, officials said.

The Indonesian military said the Sukhoi Superjet-100?"fell" from the sky, Reuters reported.?Several diplomats from the Russian Embassy, potential buyers from several Indonesian airlines and journalists were?among the 38 passengers on board, according to Rear Marshal Daryatmo, a search and rescue official who only uses one name. There were also eight Russian crew members, he added. ??

The flight took off from Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma Airport at about 2 p.m. local time (3 a.m. ET) and disappeared from radar near the 7,200-foot Mount Salak in West Java, national search agency spokesman Gagah Prakoso told The Associated Press. It had been scheduled to return 50 minutes later.

Citing an official, Reuters reported that radio contact was lost with the plane after it descended from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet.

"I saw a big plane passing just over my house," said Juanda, a villager who lives near Mount Salak told local station TVOne. "It was veering a bit to one side, the engine roaring. It seemed to be heading toward Salak, but I didn't hear an explosion or anything."

Olga Kayukova, a spokeswoman for Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, told Reuters the Sukhoi Superjet-100 was making a second flight as part of the demonstration program.?

"The first flight was carried out in a normal mode ... The pre-flight preparations were carried out in full and the plane was completely ready to fly," she said.?

"According to information from Indonesia, the contact with the plane was broken after 20 minutes from the take-off ... ?search works are under way."?

An Indonesian charter airline Sky Aviation posted on its Facebook account what it said was a picture of a Sukhoi Superjet-100 at the airport.

Mast Irham/ EPA

Relatives of people who were believed to be on the missing Sukhoi Superjet-100 aircraft check the passenger list at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday.

Search and rescue teams were heading to the area, said Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Transportation.?Bad weather, however, forced at least two helicopters to turn back. ??

'No trace'
"A helicopter has just returned but says there is no trace of it. Rescuers are looking at the maps trying to determine where it could be," Sergey Dolya, who flew on the missing aircraft's first flight, told Russia Today.

Russia Today said a hijacking had not been ruled out by local officials, but noted the plane would have run out of fuel by now.

With a capacity of 68-103 passengers, the Sukhoi's Superjet-100 was developed in partnership with Boeing and Italy's Finmeccanica.?The plane is the first completely new airliner designed by Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The missing plane was on the fourth stop of a six-nation "Welcome Asia!" roadshow after having already been to Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan.

It was supposed to head next to Laos and Vietnam. Russia has hoped that the short- to mid-range jet, which made its maiden run in 2008, will help it break into international markets dominated by Boeing and Airbus.

Sukhoi, which has orders for 170 planes, plans to produce up to 1,000 Superjets, primarily for foreign markets.

Seniors Will be Rest Assured Get Much Needed home care in ...

Over the last few years, the need for trustworthy retirement living facility has been increased. These days a large number of companies have emerged and promise to have become one of the most reliable providers of elder homecare needs and throughout the Ontario. We can say that the claims of such companies to offer the best possible retirement living in Ontario services and excellent senior home care at competitive rates has made it very difficult for families in need to make a right decision.

Before you select a company that you can rely upon, consider evaluating against some foundational standards on a priority basis. You are recommended to ask them what the values and staff competencies are. Make sure that the level of training provided to nursing staff is of high standard and they are highly dedicated to providing extra care and towards value creation for their clients.

The truth is that the individuals are passionate and the driving force is not simply making money but also senior care. The staff should have qualities of trust, honor and respect in the highest regard and these values are infused throughout.

One common question is how they feel while serving their clients. In case if they seriously get great satisfaction in being included in their clients? lives then they will genuinely care. No doubt in the fact that caring is the essence of their job. Make sure you have checked out the staff behavior towards the seniors and of course, are they just being there with your beloved one or are they making them feel at ease at retirement living Ontario. Does your chosen home care facility also offers free pre-planning for the in home care services? Is their staff members equipped to give the best possible care while giving the feel of comfort at home and expertly matches each client with the right care provider? For elderly people that are no longer able to live at their present residential place, do they offer free tours of independent and assisted living facilities with vacancies? If they do then these are the services that make them uniquely qualified to provide their clients with the highest level of service at very reasonable cost.

There are numerous retirement living in Ontario facilities available in the city.

And the main thing is that every member of these home care facilities holds trust, honor and respect in the highest regard and these qualities are infused throughout every aspect of their services.
